The Certified Medication Aide administers prescribed drugs to residents in accordance with company standards and federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations.

Essential Activities and Tasks 

Care Management and Service Delivery - 50%

  • Dispenses oral, inhalation and topical medications to patients under direct supervision of a licensed nurse.

  • Observes patients for drug reactions and report any problems to the nurses.

  • Performs tasks associated with medication administration, including patient vital signs reporting the need for PRN medication to the Charge Nurse and receives permission to give medication after the Charge Nurse has assessed the patient and confirmed the need.

  • Assists the Charge Nurse in providing care to clients, which includes observation and reporting of client needs.

  • Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth and personal interest, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit.

Operations Management - 25%

  • Stocks the medication cart, reporting to the nurse when a medication needs ordered.

  • Ensures that CNAs are doing frequent rounds and call lights are answered in a timely manner and residents needs are met.

  • Checks rooms for all medications and unauthorized food items, reporting findings to the Charge Nurse.

  • Maintains resident and patient rooms, work areas/equipment in a clean, sanitary and safe manner and follows established infection control/standard precautions, reporting all hazardous conditions to the Charge Nurse immediately.

  • Attends care conferences as directed by Charge Nurse.

  • Attends all-employee and departmental meetings and in-service training as scheduled or as directed.

  • Willingly and consistently shares observations and insights of departmental operations that may improve quality and efficiencies of department.

Administration and Reporting - 25%

  • Recording medication administration according to facility procedure

  • Reports all changes in resident’s or patient’s condition to the Charge Nurse as soon as practical.

  • Reports all concerns and complaints voiced or shared by residents, patients, or family members.

All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Current unencumbered certification for the state of Ohio to practice as a Certified Medication Aide required.

Experience

  • One year of health care industry experience required.

  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

Working Conditions and Special Requirements

  • Sitting - Up to 8 hours/day

  • Standing - Up to 8 hours/day

  • Walking - Up to 8 hours/day

  • Lifting, transferring, pushing or pulling residents/patients or equipment/supplies - Up to 50 pounds

  • Work weekends, evenings, and holidays - Required as scheduled

  • Subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, and cuts - Work day

  • Subject to residents/patients with various disease processes - Work day

  • May be exposed to infectious waste, disease, conditions, etc. including exposure to the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses - Work day
