The Director of Independent Living is responsible for the operation and supervision of the independent living program, apartments, villas, cottages, and homes and addresses the concerns and promotes the independence and well-being of the residents in accordance with company standards and federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations.

Essential Activities and Tasks 

Care Management and Service Delivery - 40%

  • Remains up to date on residents’ well-being and ability to live independently.

  • Works with key staff to identify residents needing help, develops and implements a plan to address these needs through the Aging in Place Committee. 

  • Interacts with residents to ensure that quality care and positive resident/staff relations are taking place.

  • Maintains open and trust-building relationships with resident family members responding professionally and promptly to any requests or concerns.

  • Develops, communicates and follows through with necessary action plans regarding issues from the resident’s satisfaction surveys and listening events.

  • Responds to resident, employee, and vendor concerns, complaints, and suggestions and maintains a written record of actions taken.

  • Provides orientation for new residents and family members assist with transition, in or out of the community.

  • May be required to respond to requests from the Resident Alert System.

Operations Management - 20%

  • Manages daily independent living operations to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements through appropriate departmentalization and delegation of duties.

  • Organizes, implements, evaluates, and directs the day-to-day activities of the various departments of the independent living business operations.

  • Coordinates admissions, transfers, and discharges of residents as necessary as determined by the interdisciplinary team.

  • Works with marketing and independent living prospects to promote and sell the life plan community and its services.  

  • Assists in the development and maintenance of the policies and procedure manual, and ensures facility-wide compliance with said policies and procedures.

  • Organizes and maintains office procedures and supervises workflow of staff.

  • Attends all-employee and departmental meetings and in-service training as scheduled or as directed.

Financial Management - 10%

  • Performs applicable accounts receivable, accounts payable, application, and admission forms and functions.

  • Oversees financials on a monthly basis to ensure that annual budget and other financial targets are met.

  • Provides corrective measurements when unexpected costs or reduced revenues occur.

People Management and Development - 10%

  • Supervises independent living staff.

  • Fosters a positive work environment that attracts, retains, and motivates employees.

  • Interviews, selects, and orients new direct reports.

  • Defines, establishes, and promotes performance expectations so direct reports understand and demonstrate excellence through high quality and consistent performance.

  • Evaluates job performance of direct reports in accordance with the company policy and procedure and provides developmental guidance to staff for improved performance and growth.

  • Monitors accountability with organization requirements prescribed by the Employee Handbook.  Documents and engages employees who are routinely not observing these requirements in an effort to achieve compliance.  Works with Human Resources when circumstances arise that necessitate further documentation and intervention.

  • Participates in the development, planning, scheduling, conducting, and monitoring of in-service training programs, on-the-job training, and orientation programs for departmental staff.

  • Ensures that there is a reasonable and sufficient plan for staffing should a direct report be absent or a direct reporting position be vacant.

  • Responds timely and thoughtfully to questions, requests, and work product from departmental staff that has been provided for review and approval.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or the equivalent required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, nursing or a related field preferred.

  • Housing Manager Certificate preferred.

Experience

  • Five years experience in social services, hospitality, marketing, or general business operations management required, in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.

  • Experience with the HUD Enterprise Income Verification (EIV) system and related security concerns preferred, if applicable.

  • Experience working with the senior population preferred.

  • Proficiency with Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and the internet required.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

  • Sitting - Up to 6 hours/day

  • Walking - Up to 4 hours/day

  • Lifting, transferring, pushing or pulling residents/patients or equipment/supplies - Up to 50 pounds

  • Travel % / Overnight Travel - Minimal

  • Work weekends, evenings, and holidays - Occasional

  • On-call availability - 24/7 for emergencies

  • Subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, and cuts - Work day

  • Subject to residents with various disease processes - Daily

  • May be exposed to infectious waste, disease, conditions, etc. including exposure to the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses - Work day
